Baby Cots

For many parents, a baby cot will be the most important purchase for the nursery, and understandably so. The baby cot will be the baby’s physical and emotional home for at least the first two years of his / her life. It is also the most iconic item in the nursery.

Baby cots are now offered in a seemingly endless array of silhouette and wood finishes. Your choice will depend not only on the design style and palette you’ve selected for your nursery but also on the level of functionality you desire. Think about your child’s sleep needs for both now and over the next couple of years.

You can use your cot from the day your baby is born, if you like. However, many parents choose a Moses basket or carrycot for the first few months.  This is often because a newborn baby can look and feel a little lost in a big cot. If cost effectiveness is your concern, why not choose a Cot-bed (convertible baby cot)?

A cot bed transforms into a toddler bed by removing the cot’s front panel and installing a guard rail in place of it (optional in some models). While the conversion kit might cost some extra money, it will definitely extend the lifespan and usefulness of the cot.

The Super Nanny cots have been tested to AS/NZS 2172 safety standard, have a drop sides and two adjustable base heights to make it easier to lift your baby in and out as he grows. It’s a good idea to lower the base when your baby is old enough to pull himself up, so that he stays secure in the cot. Many cots also have a teething rail, which is a protective plastic coating around the edges, to prevent your baby chewing on the wooden slats of the cot when he is older.  The main advantage of a cot bed is that they can be converted into a junior bed when your toddler outgrows his cot.

If functionality is your top concern, then you’ve narrowed down your search quite considerably. If style is your priority, then prepare to be spoiled for choice.

The Mattress.
When choosing a mattress for your cot, choose a firm mattress, in perfect condition. The best idea is to buy the mattress when you buy the cot, so you can check that it fits your cot properly (there should be no space around the edge of the mattress when it is in the cot).
