Britax Poplar S ClickTight convertible car seat

Britax Poplar vs Poplar S vs One4Life Slim: Which to Choose (NZ)

Three of Britax's most popular ClickTight car seats, compared. Find out how the Poplar, Poplar S and One4Life Slim differ, and which suits your family.

The Britax Poplar, Poplar S and One4Life Slim are three of the most popular car seats we sell at Babies.co.nz, and they look very similar. All three use Britax's ClickTight® installation, all three are slim enough to fit three across in many cars, and all three let your child ride rear-facing up to 22.7kg. So what's the difference, and which one should you buy?

The short answer:

  • Britax Poplar: best value if you're buying for a toddler or already have a capsule.
  • Britax Poplar S: best if you want one seat from birth with the anti-rebound bar and infant inserts included.
  • Britax One4Life Slim: best if you want one seat all the way from birth to booster, for up to 10 years.

What all three have in common

Whichever you choose, you get the things Britax is best known for:

  • ClickTight® installation: open the seat, thread and buckle the seatbelt, then click it closed. It's one of the easiest ways to get a secure fit, especially if you move the seat between cars.
  • Extended rear-facing to 22.7kg: well beyond the minimum recommended in NZ, so most children can stay rear-facing for several years.
  • Slim design: 43–44.5cm wide, designed to fit three across in many vehicles (Britax can't guarantee three-across in every car).
  • SafeCell® protection, a steel frame and a V-shaped tether to help manage crash forces.
  • Machine-washable, naturally flame-retardant fabrics with no added FR chemicals.

Britax Poplar: the value choice

The Britax Poplar ClickTight is the starting point of the range. It has the same ClickTight installation, rear-facing and forward-facing limits and slim 43cm shell as the Poplar S, but comes without the infant inserts and anti-rebound bar.

Choose the Poplar if: you're moving your toddler up from an infant capsule, or you want a second seat for grandparents' car. If you'd like the anti-rebound bar later, it's available separately.

Britax Poplar S: ready from day one

The Britax Poplar S ClickTight adds the newborn-ready extras: infant inserts for a snug fit from birth, and a pre-installed ReboundReduce® anti-rebound bar that helps reduce movement in a rear-facing crash.

Choose the Poplar S if: you're skipping the capsule and want one convertible seat from birth to around 5 years, with everything included in the box.

Britax One4Life Slim: one seat for 10 years

The Britax One4Life Slim ClickTight does everything the Poplar S does, then keeps going. Once your child outgrows the harness, it converts to a high-back belt-positioning booster up to 54kg and 160cm tall, so you won't need to buy a separate booster seat. It also has 15 harness positions, 9 recline positions and three infant inserts.

The anti-rebound bar isn't included, but the Britax Anti-Rebound Bar for One4Life is available separately.

Choose the One4Life Slim if: you want to buy one seat and be done, from birth to booster age.

Rear-facing limits explained

All three seats are rear-facing from 2.3kg up to 22.7kg (50lb), or until your child reaches the seat's rear-facing height limit, whichever comes first. For most children that's well past age 2. Rear-facing is the safest way for young children to travel, so we recommend keeping your child rear-facing for as long as the seat allows.

When they do turn forward-facing, all three seats use a 5-point harness up to 29.5kg (65lb). Only the One4Life Slim then converts to a booster.

Do I need an infant capsule first?

Not with these seats. The Poplar S and One4Life Slim are designed for use from birth, with infant inserts included. Some parents still prefer a capsule for the first year because you can lift it out of the car and click it onto a stroller without waking your baby. If that's you, the Britax Willow S infant capsule pairs well with the standard Poplar later on.

So, which Britax seat should you choose?

  • Buying for a toddler, or after a capsule? Go with the Poplar.
  • Buying from birth and want everything included? Go with the Poplar S.
  • Want one seat all the way to booster age? Go with the One4Life Slim.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Britax Poplar and Poplar S?

They share the same shell, ClickTight installation and weight limits. The Poplar S adds infant inserts and a pre-installed anti-rebound bar, so it's ready for a newborn straight out of the box.

Is the One4Life Slim worth the extra over the Poplar S?

If you'd otherwise buy a separate booster seat later, often yes. The One4Life Slim adds a high-back booster mode up to 54kg, giving up to 10 years of use from one seat. The Poplar S includes the anti-rebound bar, which is an extra purchase for the One4Life Slim.

Will these seats fit three across?

The Poplar and Poplar S are 43cm wide and the One4Life Slim is 44.5cm wide, so all three are designed to fit three across in many vehicles. Every car is different, so bring your car to our East Tāmaki showroom and we can do a trial fitting.

Are these seats approved for use in New Zealand?

Yes. They're manufactured to US standards and carry the NZ-approved "S" mark.

Both use the same wide, breast-shaped teat design — the difference is in how they handle air reduction. Closer to Nature has a built-in anti-colic valve in the teat that reduces air ingestion during feeds. Advanced Anti-Colic goes further, with a heat-sensing tube at the bottom of the bottle that actively vents air out of the milk before it reaches your baby. For most babies, Closer to Nature is plenty. For babies with more significant colic, wind, or reflux, Advanced Anti-Colic is the better choice.

Yes — the Closer to Nature range is one of the most recommended bottles for combination feeding. The wide, breast-shaped teat encourages the same broad latch breastfed babies use at the breast, reducing the risk of nipple confusion. Always start with a slow flow teat for a breastfed baby regardless of age, and introduce the bottle around three to four weeks once breastfeeding is well established.

For many parents, yes. The Natural Start glass bottle is made from premium borosilicate glass — odour-free, heat resistant, and very easy to sterilise. It's particularly practical in the newborn period when you're sterilising frequently and mostly feeding at home. The main trade-offs are weight and the risk of breakage. Many parents use glass at home and plastic when out and about.

Start with slow flow for all newborns — whether breastfed or formula fed. Move up to variable flow when your baby shows signs of frustration, takes too long to finish feeds, or falls asleep before finishing. Fast flow suits confident, efficient feeders from around six months. Always let your baby's cues guide the decision rather than age alone.

Yes — both ranges include anti-colic features. Closer to Nature has a built-in anti-colic valve that reduces air ingestion. Advanced Anti-Colic takes this further with an active venting system that removes air bubbles from the milk during the feed. For babies with significant colic, the Advanced Anti-Colic bottle is the stronger solution. For a more powerful anti-colic system, Dr Brown's bottles use a fully internal vent system that is clinically proven to reduce colic.

The Perfect Prep Machine makes a fresh, perfectly mixed, body-temperature formula bottle in under two minutes — safely. It delivers a shot of hot water (over 70°C) to kill bacteria in the formula powder, then tops the bottle up to the correct volume with filtered water at room temperature. The result is a safe, correctly mixed bottle at the ideal feeding temperature, every time. The Day and Night version adds a quiet pump and soft night light for night feeds. It requires replacement filters every three months — available at Babies.co.nz.

As a guide: 2–3 bottles for occasional bottle feeding of a breastfed baby; 4–6 for combination feeding; 6–8 for exclusive formula feeding. The Closer to Nature 260ml 3-pack is the most practical starting point as it gives you enough bottles for a full day without constant washing.

Yes — all Closer to Nature, Advanced Anti-Colic, and Natural Start glass bottles and teats are dishwasher safe on the top rack. Replace teats every two to three months or sooner if you notice any thinning, stickiness, or discolouration.

Both are excellent, widely trusted brands. Tommee Tippee's Closer to Nature teat is slightly softer and more flexible, which some babies find easier to latch onto. Philips AVENT's Natural Response teat uses a unique J-shape that releases milk only when your baby actively drinks — a more precise mimicry of breastfeeding. AVENT also offers more granular teat flow options (six levels vs Tommee Tippee's three). If you're combination feeding and want the most breast-like bottle experience, AVENT Natural Response is worth comparing. If you want a trusted, simple bottle with strong anti-colic performance, Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature is hard to beat. Read our full Philips AVENT buying guide →

The key difference is anti-colic power. Dr Brown's internal vent system is clinically proven to reduce colic and is the stronger solution for babies with significant wind or reflux. Tommee Tippee's anti-colic valve (Closer to Nature) and heat-sensing tube (Advanced Anti-Colic) are effective for most babies but less comprehensive than Dr Brown's approach. On the other hand, Tommee Tippee is simpler to clean — fewer parts, no internal vent tube to wash — and the breast-shaped teat is widely regarded as one of the best for combination feeding. Most paediatric guidance recommends transitioning from a bottle to a cup around 12 months. Tommee Tippee makes this easy with their integrated cup and sippy range. The transition from bottle to sippy cup is smoother when you stay within the same brand — the familiar Tommee Tippee feel and quality helps babies accept the change more readily.
